That’s why we have put together this list of all things Muhammad-related to celebrate his birthday. But first... What's the meaning of Muhammad? The name doesn't directly translate to "the one who praises God." "Muhammad" likely derives from the root muh-ha-mad, ha - 'to be dumbfounded' or 'unable to utter (speech or sounds)', and mad - 'magnificent', meaning 'the one who is dumbfounded'. What’s more, Muhammad was not named for the Prophet himself, but for his grandfather. His name was Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He was also known as Abu Talib - which meant "father of Talib", or "father of assistance. ” Talib translates to "seeker". Muhammad was not the first Muslim, nor the first to receive the revelations of Allah. The first to believe in Islam was his wife Khadija, who proposed marriage to him. This was back in 595 AD. She also believed in his prophethood before any other member of her society. What’s more, Prophet Muhammad’s mission is universalistic. His mission includes all people of all religions, not just Muslims. He prophesied that there will be 37 groups after him. He called all of them the umma - the nation, which is Arabic for "community". Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is on 14th of Rabi al Awwal in the Islamic calendar. The month of his birth is most commonly recognized as Ramadan, the month when Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation. His birthday is celebrated on that day in most Muslim countries. The current date for this event was established during the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 by the Christian Church, who decided to adopt it as an official holiday with origins in Christianity. It is called Mawlid al-Nabi in Arabic, and often falls on the 15th or 16th of July. Muhammad was born in 570 C.E., in the Arabian Peninsula. He was born to Aminah and Abdullah, who were both of humble origins. His father died before he was born, so he became an orphan at the age of six. He grew up as a shepherd with his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Fatimah Bint Asad. eccc085e13
